LILY PYE- talking colour

To start with I wanted to experiment with different medias I had available at home that I wouldn’t usually always choose to use. I used varied medias such as acrylic paint, water colour paint, water colour pencils and felt tip pens, all creating different textures and effects. I also experimented with using different scales and using different collaging techniques. For the first couple of images I focused on the idea of the coral reef and in particular the vibrancy and texture found within the Ocean. Using some primary images I’d taken at an exhibition I used the free flowing organic shapes found within the images and tried to recreate something similar taking inspiration from what I saw and the particular patterns that caught my eye. Firstly, using simple fine liners I created a flat surface pattern and then I moved on to using acrylic paints where I drew similar patterns using bold pastel colours I mixed myself which I later cut into a more organic shape to give it more of the focus on the paper. I wanted to delve into using a bold colour pallet whist also moving away from the busy print with lots of refinement that I usually prefer to make. Instead I choose to do something a little more abstract, zooming into a certain part of an image rather than the image as a whole. I also took inspiration from a lot of the vibrancy of Camden which as a group we visited in order to take inspiration before completing the task, I captured images of the graffiti, the interior design of one of the cafes, the items being sold at the market, the vibrant clothing people were wearing and just the reckless use of colour. Usually I use very bold colours so I thought it would be good to also try a more subtle colour palate and to achieve this I used water colour pencils.
